Best Place For 53 Plate Galaxy Climate Control (centre Console) Unit ?

Hi all,

 

The positioning of my 53 plate Galaxy's cup holder means my air con control panel has received a full dose of lemonade courtesy of Mr McDonalds leaky drink cup.

 

The unit is now dead - no lights at all. The quickclear window functions though (button further up the console next to the radio), but no fans and no temp control, no illumination on the c/con unit.

 

I've taken the unit out, cleaned it, dried it, it's still dead (have to put it back though or quickclear doesn't work on the windscreen).

 

So looks like I need a new one.

 

Can anyone advise best place to get one ?

well its either that or a scrappy?? or the dealers by the sound of it,you might be able to find someone whos a boff with electronics?

Is a VW part exactly the same ?? Widens my options a bit.

 

Windscreen demist works fine with the unit in or out, must have been mistaken before....

well if you own a tdi,then about 98% of the galaxy is vw,and that includes the alhambra aswell.

I've many years of experience fixing this type of equipment, mainly domestic stuff, that has been ruined by spilled drinks and often urine :) .

 

The problems are a combination of damp, corrosion from acid and electolysis where, as a result of the applied voltage, entire legs of I Cs are transferred to some other part of the circuit.

 

It is possible to clear many faults by stripping it down as far as possible and giving it a good wash out with a soft brush and loads of mild detergent followed by a good rinse with water - preferably deionised. A close visual inspection is advised looking for corrosion and missing connections. (Worth doing before and after washing) Repairs with a fine soldering iron and, in my state of decay, a magnifying glass shoud be followed by an overnight spell in the airing cupboard and a few prayers.

 

I have found that actual component failure is rare but there can be a lot of patching to do.

 

It is important to catch it before too much damage is done and long spells of leaving it powered up can be fatal.

 

The one bit that can be beyond repair is the control panel and switche as these are frequently bits of plastic with tracks of conductive paint.
